Candle-Making Process
Our wax comes in big slabs, which core members can load into the big tank they have named "Henry".
When we want to pour candles, a core member brings wax from Henry and pours it into one of the thermostatically controlled pots, where an assistant adds colour and/or scent.
We have a selection of candles that we can make so that the core members can do most of the product creation. Each candle has a recipe to enable us to reproduce it.

Once the colour and/or scent is mixed in the pots, the candles are poured at the pouring table, with the help of a program assistant.
All core members take turns pouring candles, weighing and packaging tart hearts, pouring and cutting coloured chips, dipping tapers, and cleaning molds.

Brenda weighs tapers to ensure you get your full value

Heather separates the tart hearts, which are individually cut for you

Once our candles are poured, we remove them from their glass containers. The containers are then cleaned again, so that your glass jar or votive cup will be sparkling clean with no wax drips to detract from the look of these great candles. Here, Kristy, Heather, and John clean glass containers.
Tapers are made by hand-dipping the wick in wax many times. This job is often shared with core members taking turns to dip the tapers until the right diameter is reached.
Scott and Brenda do final cleaning of candle molds. They use a dehydrator to heat them, enabling easy removal of wax oil and residue from the molds before they are re-wicked.
Once a candle is poured, it has to sit and cool most of the day. As it cools, the wax shrinks and hardens, leaving a hollow in the centre of the candle which is later topped up to fill out your great candle.

The next day candles are ready to come out of their molds. Their bottoms are flattened so that they will be level, and their wicks are trimmed.

For custom orders, we work hard to match the colour of the candle to your fabric swatch or colour sample.
Brenda and Kristy work on most of the finishing touches; jute, tags, ribbon, and bags.
All of our core members love to pack candles for shipping.
Of the eleven core members at Applewicks, nine work in the candle shop part time, and spend the rest of their time in the weaving room.
Each core member has a preferred spot where he or she works independently in the candle shop.

John likes to clean the bulk of the extra wax from the molds, mugs, and wick sticks.

Scott heats the molds in a dehydrator.
